Set Free from My Cloak of Heaviness by My Immanuel…Elohim…My God Who is With Me

Have you ever faced a problem or trial that just seems way bigger than you?  It looms in front of you like a towering giant, immovable mountain too massive for any of your resources, wisdom or strength to remove.  To make matters worse, from its base come tendrils of darkness that weave their way through air towards you.  As you are enveloped in their mist, you hear their black thoughts whispered with such precision that they find their way into your mind and your heart, where their tentacles take root, and quickly bear the fruit…fear of the unknown, dismay with the possible “what ifs”, discouragement by the impossibilities.

Overwhelmed with the questions that don’t have answers and worried by the uncharted path ahead, a heavy mantle silently cloaks your shoulders, leaving you weighed down with a burdened heart, troubled mind and disquieted spirit.

Have you ever been in that place?

I have, and it is into this heavy darkness that I need to be reminded of the truth that I am not alone…

That God is with me…

Because He is Immanuel…God with us.

In my journey of studying the names of God so that I may better understand the character of Immanuel and this God who is with me, I came across the name Elohim.  This is a name of God – often used in tandem with His name Jehovah – that describes His majestic excellence and exceeding supremacy overall and it is used over 2,000 times in the Old Testament.

2,000 times!  I wasn’t sure how I was going to get through that many verses, so I decided to narrow down my journey to the book of Psalms, where the name Elohim is only used over 325 times.  Below is a summary list of what I discovered, and I would encourage you to read through it so that your hearts and minds are encouraged with the truth of who Immanuel – Elohim – is.  I don’t know about you, but sometimes when I am under a cloak of heaviness, I spend only a few minutes with God and His words of truth, but hours with my heavy burden…

And I wonder why I continue to be burdened.

Somehow, as I take time – real time…intentional time…unrushed time – so that the eyes of my heart have time to be refocused upwards to…

Elohim, my Sovereign God…

El-Shaddai, my Almighty God…

El Elyon, my God Most High…

Immanuel, my God who is with me…

I am reminded that this is the God who cares for me and who loves me.  It is onto His shoulders that I can roll my burdens.  It is under His authority I can place my mountains.  It is into His almighty strength I can place my trust and my hope and find rest and peace for my weary and troubled soul.

Because He is my Immanuel…

My God, who is with me…

And He will be with you, wherever you find yourself today.
