As we headed out the door on a day full of bright cheerfulness, we stepped onto a path encrusted with sparkles of snow that glittered in the sunshine. We were on our way to share a special birthday treat with our young daughter’s favourite horse. She was a mare who had just turned 29 years old. And though she was not ridden any longer, she was still well loved:)
When we found her, she was quietly laying beside a tree…
During the night she had simply laid down and passed away.
When my daughter saw what had happened, the light of her eager joy was quickly snuffed out. She spun around and ran away from the scene before her, tears streaming down her face. She ran into me full throttle and I held her close as she sobbed, mourning the loss of her beloved horse.
Oh how I wished that day that I could change the course of events that had just transpired, but I couldn’t. All I could do was hold her and help her navigate through these deep waters.
Have you ever had moments like that when news – unexpected and life altering – blindsides you so fully that you can’t see where you are going and you frantically spin around, looking for a safe place to anchor your heart in the midst of your turmoil?
I have had moments like that. I remember one time in particular, when the news that reached my heart so fully overwhelmed me, I put my shoes on, ran out the door and headed into the forest. There I found a spruce tree whose branches were so close to the ground I could just barely crawl towards the trunk where there was enough room for me to sit as I spilled the tears that were overflowing from my heart before my Father in heaven.
And there, as I was hiding under the branches of an evergreen in depths of the forest, I discovered that I was already hidden under the shelter of the wings of the Most High.
He was my safe place where I could anchor my soul. He was my safe place where I could honestly reveal the depths of my soul without fear. In the midst of the turmoil that had just found me…
He was my safe place.
