When I Am Weak

There have not been many times in my life that I have been comfortable with being classified as…

Weak.

So often weakness and lack of strength is not something that I would delight in…

Take pleasure in…

Find confidence in.

Indeed, it seems almost surreal to be in this place of absolute weakness –

And still be at peace…

At rest…

And filled with contentment.

On this path to becoming weak, God has so clearly been transforming my mind and my heart so that I am learning to not just say with my mouth, but also believe in my heart of hearts that…

His grace is sufficient…enough…adequate…

For His strength is made perfect and complete in weakness.

You know, I have learned that there are times when places of weakness are exactly where God wants us to be –

And remain for a period of time –

So that we learn to not rely in ourselves, our abilities, our resources, our wisdom and our strength.  In fact – while He gives us all these to use wisely for His glory – there will be times when He will test us to see if our trust is in Him or in the gifts that He has given to us, for He is a jealous God and He wants our confidence and our hope to be…

In Him alone.

Sometimes to learn this lesson all that was, must be removed until there is only Him left.  In His love and grace, He allows these times of weakness to extend far past what we consider safe or comfortable so that the faith lesson of reliance on Him alone can take root in our minds and our hearts.  It is in the gift of “time” that this truth can transform the attitudes of our heart and our pattern of thinking, along with the way that we view and respond to life.  While some lessons of faith can be learned in a flash moment, others need the benefit of time to complete their work of transformation.  For me, this has been moving me from a place of fear, anger, bitterness, frustration and discouragement in my time of weakness – to a place of peace, stillness, contentment, hope and confidence…

In Him.

You know, when Paul was plagued with a thorn in the flesh – something that made him weak – he prayed three times for it to be removed.

But God didn’t remove it.

He had another lesson that He wanted Paul to learn…

He wanted Paul to know that His grace is sufficient because His strength is made perfect in weakness.

And do you know what happened to Paul as a result of learning this lesson?

He came to the point where he could boast – and gladly boast at that – about his weakness.  He was so transformed that he was able to take pleasure in his weakness, for, in Christ, he had discovered that…

When he was weak, then he was strong.

O my friends…my brothers and sisters in the Lord…how I pray fervently that if you are in a place of weakness right now –

  • In a place where it seems like you have no ability, resources or strategy to maneuver
  • In a situation where all that you once were, had and knew has been removed
  • In circumstances where others have sensed your weakness and they are surrounding you just waiting for your day of disaster when they can come in and devour
  • In a dark place where it seems you don’t have the strength to keep going
  • Or whatever place of weakness you find yourself in

My prayer is that out of His glorious riches, God would strengthen you with might by His Spirit in your inner being so that Christ will dwell in your heart through faith – that you will have the confidence and hope to trust and rest in Him during your time of weakness – so that as you who are both rooted and established in love – will be able to comprehend, together with all God’s people, how wide and long and high and deep is the love of God…

For you.

And that as you begin to grasp this love that surpasses understanding, you will be filled to the measure of the fullness of God, and that as you are filled, the knowledge that His grace is sufficient for you and that in your weakness His strength is made perfect would permeate to the very corners of your soul, heart and mind.  I pray that He will bring you and I to the place where, together with Paul we can learn to take delight in and boast in our weaknesses…

Because, in Him, when we are weak,

That is when we are strong,

Because His grace is enough.

Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever…

Amen.
