A Crazy Beautiful (Dead End Paths: Part 5)

A small tremor trickled through the ground, tickling at the toes of those standing along the seashore.

In surprise, a few people glanced at each other and then quickly scanned the horizon looking for some clue to explain what they had felt.

But, all seemed peaceful…

As it had been ever since they had been camped along the shore of the Red Sea.  For some time now they had been enjoying a place of rest after their miraculous exodus from the land of Egypt and their subsequent desert travels.  Each day they had been led by a pillar of cloud.  Each night they had been led by a pillar of fire.  God Almighty – their Deliverer – had been directing their steps in this journey as they traveled to the Promised Land.

He had brought them to this place where they had encamped by the seashore.  Sparkles of the sun graced the waters in delight as they twinkled on the backs of the waves that lapped up against the sand.  A slight breeze blew off the large body of water, cooling the air.

The day was perfect…

Peaceful…

Restful…

The ground trembled again.  Only this time it rippled with an intensity that vibrated into the very hearts of the people.  As one, the people gathered together and stared at the trail they had just traveled only days ago…

A cloud of dust rose up along the horizon and the sound of a thousand hooves echoed through the air.  The people cried out in dismay.  They knew that sound…

But surely it couldn’t be!

Not in this place where they had been led to by God.

Horses and chariots driven by powerful warriors yelling out in mighty voices filled the horizon.  Rapidly the army of Egypt boldly and fearlessly approached the trembling camp of the Israelites.  In the face of their oppressors all the courage and boldness with which the Israelites had marched out of Egypt with fled.

Their hearts melted with fear.  This place where God had led them had turned into a trap and there was no way out.  The sea hemmed them in on one side and their enemies were on the other.  Enemies who were far stronger than they.

The Day of Disaster was upon them.

They were going to die.

They cried out to the Lord and turned to Moses, His servant and said, “Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you brought us to the desert to die?  What have you done by bringing us out of Egypt?  Didn’t we say to you in Egypt, ‘Leave us alone; let us serve the Egyptians’?  It would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the desert.”

Moses raised up his voice to be heard among the people, “Do not be afraid!  Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today.  The Egyptians you see today you will never see again.  The Lord Himself will fight for you; you need only to be still.”

The cries of dismay quieted down as murmurs of disbelief rippled through the crowd.  Don’t be afraid?  Stand firm?  Be still?  See the deliverance of the Lord?  The Lord Himself would fight for them?

Was Moses serious?  There was absolutely…

No way out!

How could God deliver them from this certain disaster?

But then, the angel of God who had been traveling in front of them moved behind the camp of the Israelites.  He stood firm and resolute between them and the Egyptians.  The pillar of cloud also moved and stood behind them coming in between the two armies.

God had made a barrier between the two groups protecting His people.

When Moses called out again, “Move on!” the people listened and gathered up their camp, working in the light that the cloud of the Lord was providing for them.  Moses turned toward the sea.  As he stretched out his hand over the sea a strong east wind began to blow.  It blew all night and the people watched in amazement as…

A path…

A dry path…

Through the sea.

A vertical wall of water stood up on the right and on the left.

“Move on!” Moses called out once again as he stepped onto the path that hours before hand not even existed.

The people followed.  The path of deliverance set before them seemed impossible…

Even a bit crazy – in a good way!

And yet, so beautiful!

A crazy, beautiful path of deliverance through the heart of the sea!

Who but God would have thought of a path of escape like this?  Who but God could have brought into existence such a path to rescue His people from sure disaster and destruction?  Who but God could turn a dead end path into the path of freedom?

Who, but God would liberate His people in such a way that the echoes of His deliverance would reverberate through the countries and the centuries to future generations (to people like you and me who also at times find ourselves led by the hand of God into dead end paths) that would leave the ears and hearts ringing of those who would hear of the works of His mighty hand and know and believe that…

The Lord, He is God!

The Lord – He is our strength and our defence…

The Lord – He is the One who is mighty to save…

Through the heart of the sea…

On a crazy, beautiful path:D
