Dead End Paths (Part 1): Embers of Hope

Can you imagine what it would be like to watch a staff turn into a snake and then back into a staff again?

I would have been wavering between being in awe and to some degree freaked out – I try to stay as far away from snakes as I can!

A staff turning into a snake was one of the signs that Moses and Aaron used as they were speaking to the elders of Israel.  Exodus 4:31 records that as the leaders heard the words of promise and saw the signs…

They believed.

Not only that, when they heard that the Lord was concerned about them and had seen their misery…

They bowed down and worshiped.

I don’t know about you, but seeing a slithering serpent turn back into a staff would definitely grab my attention.

And to hear that…

  • God had seen my misery…my affliction…my trouble…
  • God had heard my crying in my distress…
  • God was concerned about my suffering and pain…

Well, with news like that…

After feeling the stinging words of mockery by others around me…

After knowing the sting of the whip inflicted upon me by others around me…

After being in distress…misery…affliction…

Day after day and year after year…

Embers of hope would begin to flicker in my heart and my mind as I came to the realization that God Almighty – Maker of heaven and earth – wasn’t ignoring me and my suffering…

Instead He was greatly concerned…

About me.

And you know, just as He was concerned for His people’s distress all those years ago…

He is concerned for you and me today.

In fact, in His Word we are told that God Almighty – the One who is over all, through all and in all – is our:

Refuge:  He is our protection from danger around us.

Strength:  In the trouble, affliction and danger that He allows to reach us, He sovereignly gives us His strength – the power by which He raised Jesus from the dead – to endure and stand firm…moment by moment and day by day.

Ever present help in trouble:  God is with us…

All. The. Time.

He is our every present help…

All. The. Time.

Whatever trouble we are facing…whatever affliction we are going through…whatever depths of sorrow we are experiencing…

He is there…with us…helping us…

All. The. Time.

I won’t lie.  There are some days when it can be so hard to remember and hold onto this promise.  The trouble I find myself in seems to shout so loud that it leaves my ears ringing…

Yet…

When I take a step back and cry out to God…

And listen quietly for His voice…

He is there, gently holding me and reminding me that as the God of all comfort and the Father of all compassion He is there comforting me to the very degree that I am suffering.  He is there, being my refuge – my hiding place.  He is there, being my strength – enabling me to endure.  He is there…

My EVER PRESENT HELP in trouble.

And with those words of promise, the embers of hope in my fractured heart and troubled mind begin to flicker once again!
