God, Thank-you For the Trials that Bring Me to the Depths

The day was sunny and warm.  We were out in a boat on the lake, enjoying the peacefulness of the day.  This was a big deal for me, because I am not a “water” person.  I enjoy walking along the beaches and listening to the waves as they splash against the shore….

But being out in a boat is not exactly an event that I am eager to do!

If I do happen to venture out, the water needs to be calm:D

And it was this day that we ventured out onto the water.

And, I was actually relaxing and enjoying it…

Until…

Everything changed!

I don’t remember which happened first…the waves or the engine trouble…

But, they both happened!

And the peaceful day quickly changed to a “not so peaceful” day!

As the wind picked up, the calm surface of the lake began to churn – first with little waves that grew steadily in size.  Our little boat seemed so small in those waves, and we were being tossed about…

A lot.

The engine that was sputtering black smoke and all the coughs and hiccups spewing from its motor didn’t do a lot to calm my spirit!

But, you know what?

As I sent prayers upward to the One who controls the waves and others in the boat babied the engine, we finally made it to the shore!  I climbed out of the boat so thankful to set my feet on solid ground.

Coming out of that experience not only did I gain a new appreciation for the power of wind and water, but strangely enough my fear of being on the water lessened a great deal:D

There is something about going through and surviving a harrowing experience that brings a steadiness to one’s life.  The power of fear loses its grip when we are taken through the very trial that we were afraid of facing.  In the midst of the trial we learn more about the God who specially designed our trial for us in order to accomplish His ultimate good within us.

That good includes expanding our knowledge of Him so that as we know Him better our capacity to trust Him by faith will grow.  As our faith in the One who is sovereign over all grows, a steadiness and maturity is brought to our lives, and we are better enabled to…

Psalm 107:23 – 30 speaks of those who are out on the sea where they not only see the wonders of the Lord, but also…

His wonders of the deep.

How do they see those wonders of the deep?

By the waves that God raises up as He commands the winds to blow.

The very waves that He allows to toss them up high into the sky are the same waves that bring them to the depths…

Depths that are so deep their hearts melt in fear and leave them at their wits end…

Then…

They cry out to the Lord in their trouble, and He brings them out of their distresses.

He calms the storm so that the waves are still.

And then the hearts of the people are filled with gladness because the waves are quiet:D

The trials that God specially designs for us and brings into our lives are the very avenues that we need to go through so that we can discover…

The wonders of the deep…

Those gems of truth that can only be mined out by going through the deep, dark places of life…

Places that may, at the beginning, leave us reeling and staggering in fear, but that ultimately turn our hearts to God so that we will humbly call out to Him…

And trust Him to raise us up in His good time and His good way.

I love how verses 30, 31 of Psalm 107 read.  There it says, “They are glad because they (the waves) are quiet, so He guides them to their desired haven.  Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness, and for His wonderful works to the children of men.”

The trials that God designs for His children…the storms that – though frightening – allow us to discover the wonders of the deep, are the same trials that so refine our desires that they become more like our Lord Jesus Christ.  As our desires are refined, we long for the same things that God wants for us.  As we learn to delight in Him, He imprints His very desires upon our hearts so that as we pray those desires or requests back to Him, He is able to fulfil them because they are within His perfect will!

Isn’t God good?

This in turn fills our hearts with thankfulness to God for His goodness and His wonderful works to the children of me…

His wonderful works that include…

The trials that bring us to the depths.
