David was sitting in the bulls-eye of King Saul’s bitterness. Saul’s resentment of this warrior who had saved the nation from their enemies was so powerful that he was determined to destroy David, and he used all the resources that were his as king – including the army – to hunt David down.
As a result, David spent many years on the run and living in the wilderness as he attempted to stay ahead of Saul’s evil intentions.
Psalm 18 is a psalm that David wrote after the Lord had delivered him from his enemies and from the hand of Saul. It was on the path of danger…of battles…of risk…of difficulties…that God had placed before him to walk on…
That David learned to rely on the Lord…to trust in Him…to put his hope in Him…
To love Him.
And these are the words with which he opens this psalm.
I love you, Lord, my strength.
You are my help. You are the One who enables me to stand…to be resolute…to be secure…to be bold. You are the One who fills my heart with courage so that I am encouraged and with Your strength I can hold strongly to the truth of Your promises and follow steadfastly the path that You have set before me.
The Lord is my Rock.
You are my high Rock, the place where I am safe from my foes.
The Lord is my Fortress.
You are my hiding place…my defense…my strong place…my impregnable stronghold.
The Lord is my Deliverer.
You are the One who helps me escape and brings me to a place of safety. You save me. You do what I cannot do.
The Lord is my Rock of Strength.
You are God Almighty who strengthens me with Your power and strength. When I am weak, then I am strong, for Your strength is made perfect in my weakness.
The Lord is my Shield.
You are my protector…my defense…the One who surrounds me with Your unfailing love and shelters me with Your unfailing faithfulness.
The Lord is the Horn of my Salvation.
You are the One who speaks truth into the storms and battles into which You lead me. Your truth pierces through the darkness like a ray of light, bringing with it a sparkle of hope, as You remind me of Your promises…Your presence…Your provisions…Your Salvation…Your rescue…Your deliverance.
The Lord is my Stronghold.
You are my secure height…my lofty place. You set me in a high place and shelter me under the shadow of Your wings. You are my stronghold which cannot be infiltrated. Anything that You have not purposed for my life cannot reach me. Anything that You allow into my life, You will enable, strengthen and equip me to face.
These are some of my reflections as I have been thinking about the verses of this Psalm. It was because of the trials that he faced on the experiences that he did journey that God had placed before him to take, that David could say with confidence…
I love you, Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
Whatever you may be facing today, my prayer is that you will know within your heart and mind, that He who has called you to walk this path of faith will be with you and will be for you…
Just as He was for David.
