His Loving Eye

Teaching tricks to horses is one of my favorite undertakings:D  My trick horse Cali has quite the personality and together we have had a lot of fun.  Some of her tricks include counting, shaking a “hoof”, rearing, curtsy bow, run in the direction I point, come when I beckon her, bow, twirling a ball, pulling off blankets, picking up garbage, and quite a few others:D  Some of these I have taught her and some of them she has taught herself.  One of the current ones we are working on is learning to sing a duet…

In horse language:D

This one has been taking longer than others to catch onto, but together we are learning to overcome the hurdles, and are making some good steps forward!

It’s a lot of fun “playing” with Cali.  With her I have discovered the delight that there is in working in liberty with a horse – without the use of ropes, halters and bridles.  It took a lot of time to get to this point with Cali.  I had to start with basic steps that she could understand.  This laid the foundation upon which we could start to expand her understanding and refine her skills.  She had to learn to “read” my body language and small cues that I gave her…

And I had to learn to expect good “surprises” from Cali:D  I have learned that as I begin to expand the thinking of a horse – past the basic stop, go, turn left, turn right – the horse gains confidence and their personality begins to really shine through…

Sometimes in the most unexpected ways.

One time when Cali and I were showing a small group of people some of the tricks she could do, I asked Cali what she would do if the queen came for a visit.  I cued her to do a curtsy bow…but that is not what she did!  Instead she looked at me and then let out a very loud, very dramatic…

Horse snort:D

I and the rest of the people there had a good laugh…

And then Cali did the curtsy bow!

As we have spent time with each other, Cali’s knowledge and understanding has increased, and together we have found a greater degree of freedom not only to undertake more complex, difficult tasks, but also to just delight in each other as we learn to trust one another more and more.

In Psalm 32:8, 9 God says, “I will instruct you and teach you in the way that you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye upon you.  Do not be like the horse or the mule which have no understanding but must be controlled by bit and bridle or they will not come to you.”

You know, God desires and delights to instruct us, teach us, and counsel us.  In fact, His intention is to move us past the surface…past the basic teaching – the milk – that we received when we first came to know Christ.  He wants to move us forward so that we are able to understand “the meat” of His Word (see 1. Cor. 3:1 – 3).

This happens as we spend time with God learning what He wants to teach us.  As He instructs us, He instills in us knowledge and wisdom.  As we gain understanding we learn to comprehend the direction that He is pointing us in.

As He counsels and we walk forward on the path He has set before us, we not only hear the guidance that He provides for course changes/corrections and warnings of danger, but we also hear His words of promise.  As He counsels us, He does so with His loving eye upon us.  As we learn that God delights in us, we begin to delight in this God of the universe…the Father of all compassion…the Giver of all wisdom…the Good Shepherd of our souls…the Provider of every need…the One who never forsakes us…the One who holds us in His hands…the One who has prepared the way beforehand for us to walk in…the One whose staff and rod bring comfort in dark valleys…the One who prepares for us a table in the presence of our enemies…the One who anoints our heads with oil…the One whose unfailing love and perfect goodness follow us everywhere we go as we follow He who goes before us…the One in whom we have a sure and living hope that will not put us to shame…the One whose love for us is higher than the highest heaven…the One who forgives every sin…the One who not only redeems our lives from the pit, but then also crowns us with love and compassion…the One who satisfies our desires with good things…the One whose faithfulness has no end…the One who refreshes every morning with His tender compassion and unfailing love…

This is the One who wants to instruct us…teach us…counsel us…

With His loving eye upon us.

As we grow in our knowledge of God, His character, His promises and the instructions we find in His word, we are able take the next step that He has set before us to take –

With boldness and confidence…

Without fear!

He has promised to instruct us…teach us…counsel us in the way that we should go.  And He will, for He is the One who watches over us…

His loving eye upon us:D
