When God Takes Out the Garbage That’s In My Life…

Ouch, God!  That hurts!!!

Have you ever had moments like that when you are reading the Word of God and it penetrates into your soul…discerning the thoughts and the intents of your very heart…

Sometimes even uncovering stinky smelling attitudes that were well covered or even unknown until that very moment?

That has happened to me more than once…

And it hurts.

When God, by His Spirit, begins to root out those malodorous, putrid, foul and rank attitudes of my heart, He doesn’t just stop there.  He also unveils and allows me to see very plainly how the “fragrant” odors of this poisonous attitude in my heart is permeating the thoughts of my mind and the actions that I take.

For you see, even though God’s refinement in my life is meant for my good…

It’s not painless…

It isn’t easy – in fact, sometimes it hurts a lot – to come face to face with the weeds and the garbage in my life that have been kept hidden for so long…

And foolish me…sometimes when God reveals these faults in my life, I try to ignore them or shove them back under wraps…

But, it doesn’t work.

For when God begins His refinement process, those attitudes, thoughts and actions of my life that He wants to purify get a buoyant quality to them…

They just keep resurfacing…

Popping up again and again…

Until I get down on bended knee, repent and yield my spirit to God’s refinement process.

Once this happens, then God begins to show me how to replace these attitudes, thoughts and actions with ones that are pleasing and fragrant in His sight…

This is the pleasant part of God’s refinement.

Both parts of refinement – the painful and the pleasant – are needed and are meant for my good, so that I will more clearly reflect Jesus in my life, and so that I am able to enjoy more fully the abundant life that I can have in Him.

Lord, when You want to clean out the garbage of my stinky attitudes, rotten thoughts and foul actions, help me to be willing to listen and to obey.  Amen.
