The Tale of the Mustard Seed

Along the place where land and sea meet, there once stood a mountain…

Colossal in size, majestic in splendor and powerful in strength.

Many had tried to remove this mountain from its foundation, but each one failed.

Regardless of the amount of intelligent planning that went into developing the strategies for removal…

Regardless of the amount of equipment and strength and abilities that were brought onsite to carry out the plans for removal…

It can be impossible to move the mountains in our lives with our own strategy and strength.

Regardless of the amount of effort that was expended to remove the mountain…

Nothing worked.

The mountain stood firm.

Soon plans were made to tunnel through…

They failed.

Strategies were made to dig under…

They failed.

Tactics were developed to make a way around or over the mountain…

They failed.

This mountain could not be moved, tunneled through, dug under or gone around or over.

When we can’t move them, we try to tunnel through, dig under or find a way over.

It appeared that it was there to stay.

But then one day a Gardener came.  In His hand He held a seed that He had created.  Within it He had placed all that was required for that seed to begin to grow into the plant He had designed it to become.  As the plant grew, He would continue to provide all that was needed for it to carry out the work that it had created for it to do.

This seed that was in His hand was a mustard seed…

Seemingly small in size and weak in strength when compared to the lofty mountain that towered above.

In a spot of His choosing, not far from the foot of the mountain, the Gardener dug a small hole, and placed the seed inside.  He covered it with dirt and then watered it.

Within a few days, a fragile green shoot pushed its way through the black earth.  Fed by the sun above and watered by underground springs, it continued to grow.  As the stem now covered with branches and leaves continued to rise upwards, its roots pushed down deep into the ground underneath it.

There are some mountains that – when within the will of our Father – can only be moved by faith…the size of a mustard seed.

Little by little, it continued to grow as the Gardener continued to care for it and provide for every need.

But then, one day, hidden far underground, the roots of the mustard seed encountered an obstruction…

An obstacle so hard…so firm…so solid…

Seemingly impenetrable.

The foundation of the mountain was blocking the way.

But as the plant looked at the hugeness of mountain that was blocking the path for its roots, it raised its arms upwards and was fed by the light of the sun.  With this food, it received strength so that its roots could penetrate the rock foundation of the mountain.

A small tremor shook the mountain and a small crevice appeared.  Beginning at the mustard plant, it fractured into many channels, each one snaking its way across the ground to various points along the base of the mountain.

Another tremor shook the ground, but the mustard seed continued to stand firm, growing in the place where it had been planted by the Gardener.

It raised its arms upwards to the sun and pushed it roots deeper into the soil…

And then…

The whole mountain trembled and quivered as the ground beneath it shook and quaked.  Small pebbles spilled down the sides and splashed into the waves of the sea far below.  Soon those pebbles were being chased by granite boulders…

And for one more moment, the mountain stood tall and powerful, silhouetted against the sky, and then…

It plummeted into the heart of the sea.

As the raging waves were calmed, the trembling land was quieted, and the dust settled to the ground…

The mountain was no longer visible.

It had disappeared from sight.

In its place, a path had been made…

A path…

Not formed by the strategies, abilities, wealth, wisdom or strength of man…

But formed, by one small seed…

A mustard seed…

Whose obedience was firmly connected to the One who had created it…

Whose faith was firmly rooted in the One who had planted it…

Whose eyes were firmly fixed upward on the One who provided for every need…

A mustard seed…

Who – although small in size – was strengthened by the power of the One who was its Creator, Planter and Provider…

And was able to cast a mountain into the heart of the sea!
